#897 What's Up Fellas? Put Your Foot Down, Forward-facing Pushchairs

Have you heard the expression "a box of fluffy ducks"? I think it might be a NZ saying. Or maybe NZ and Australia. It means "fine".

Є такий вислів «a box of fluffy ducks» ≈ сонечко в корзинці. Я гадаю що походження цієї фрази Новозеландське (NZ), чи навіть NZ-Австралійське. В перекладі значить «добре».

Fluffy ducks (ie. ducklings) are supposed to be cute and give you 'warm fuzzy'(ie. nice) feelings. So if you had a whole box of them then it would be a great big box of warm fuzzy, nice feelings. Usually this phrase is used sarcastically. So if I were to ask you how you were and You answered with "a box of fluffy f***ing ducks" I would gather from this information you were feeling pretty shite.("f***ing" being an optional insert)... So there you have it.

Today we’re studying another scene from Enemy of the State.
In this scene, the main character, who is called Robert, is hiding in the very back of his nanny’s car. And his son and his son’s friend are sitting in the back seat. And he wants to talk to his son, but he doesn’t want anyone to see him because he’s being followed.

So when he starts talking, and his son and his son’s friend turn around to look at him, he says: No, no, turn around, sit down. Face forward!

The first thing Robert says is: What’s up fellas?
Fella is an informal way of referring to a man.
So fellas is a group of males.

 

І коли він починає говорити, з дітьми і вони повертають до нього голови, він промовляє: Ні, ні, поверніться, і сидіть як раніше. Дивіться вперед!

Robert’s son Eric hasn’t seen him for a while and he asks his dad: Where did you go?

They been is an informal way of saying they have been. This is for native speakers only, I don’t recommend trying to speak like that because it will probably sound wrong.

To death is an idiom which means extremely or very.
You can be bored to death, scared to death, sick to death.

 

They been це неформальна форма від they have been. Так іноді говорять місцеві жителі, і тому не варто так говорити.

To death – це ідіома яка значить надзвичайно чи дуже.

By about February I’ll probably sick to death of winter and I’ll be really looking forward to spring.
В кінці лютого зима добряче набридає sick to death, я з нетерпінням починаю думати про весну.

Kia Ora in Stick News today life may not be such a box of fluffy ducks for children who ride in forward-facing push chairs.

Pushchairs, or strollers are popular vehicles for babies and young children. But new research from the UK has found that some kinds of pushchairs may be harmful for babies. The study found that parents using face-to-face pushchairs were more likely to talk to their children, and those children were less likely to exhibit signs of stress. The psychologist who led the research said the data suggests that for many babies today, life in a buggy is emotionally impoverished and possibly stressful. "Stressed babies grow into anxious adults,” she said.

Eric asks his Dad about the fight that his parents had.
He says: Who won the fight?
And Robert says: This is your Dad, Eric. You know when I put my foot down, that's it.
He’s trying to say, of course he won, because he’s the one that has the most power in the relationship – which is actually not true.

When I was listening to McCain’s concession speech, his delivery reminded me of a song called: The Sunscreen Song. Actually that’s not its official title, it’s officially called: Everybody’s free (to wear sunscreen).

The lyrics of the song were from a newspaper column which was published in 1997 in a Chicago newspaper. And then a film director decided he wanted to make a song with the column and he hired a voice actor to read it. The song first came out on an album in 1998 and then it was released as a single in 1999. I was working in commercial radio at the time and we played it all the time – which I enjoyed because it’s a great song. And it’s a great song to study too. It’s basically just a list of very good advice spoken over music.

They will only make you feel ugly.

That is so true. Very good advice.

Word of the Day

Today’s word is: inalienable. This is a formal word and I don’t think you really need to learn it or use it. But it’s one of those words that you can kind of guess what it means by looking at his parts.

In means not.
Alien means foreign or unfamiliar.

So you could guess that it means something like: not able to be unfamiliar. And that’s pretty much what it means. It means something that is not able to be taken away from you.

inalienable [ɪn'eɪlɪənəb(ə)l] невідчужуваний; невід'ємний

Kia Ora in Stick News today a stick has been inducted into the National Toy Hall of Fame in the United States of America.

The National Toy Hall of Fame was established in 1998. The first inductees were announced the following year. So far more than forty toys have been added. This year’s inductees were: the skateboard, the baby doll and the stick. The museum’s curator praised the stick for its all-purpose, no-cost, recreational qualities. He said it’s very open-ended, all-natural, the perfect price and there aren't any rules or instructions for its use.

I didn’t do much work today … I was just staring at my computer screen excited and moved by the speeches and the footage … it was great seeing how happy and excited everyone is in the US. Well, not everyone but …

I’ve been enjoying reading what people are saying on Twitter about the election. Twitter has a section called “hot topics” and one of them is President Obama and if you’re in that section, new posts that mention President Obama pop up all the time.

Today it started snowing properly and now everything is white … which is kind of sad to see the earth disappear and know that it’s going to be sleeping for the next six months.

Сьогодні все так добряче замело , що нічого не видно з під снігу ...  навіть сумно що земля вкрита білою ковдрою заснула на довгі шість місяців.

But today I also feel very excited because it’s the 4th of November 2008 and as you know, unless you’ve been living under a rock with no internet access … it is the presidential election in the United States.

Але ця казковість не діє на мене сьогодні ... бо навіть медвідь в берлозі інтернет переглядає ... адже 4-е Листопада 2008 року - це день президентських виборів в Сполучених Штатах.

I read this caption under a photo yesterday:  

Democratic candidate Barack Obama and Republican candidate John McCain - their epic battle for the presidency has the whole world transfixed.

caption - 1) заголовок (статті, розділу) 2) титр, напис на екрані

epic - 1. епічний 2. епічна поема; епос

transfix - 1) пронизувати; простромлювати; проколювати 2) прикути до місця; приголомшити; паралізувати

Битва між Кандидатом від Демократів Бараком Обамою та Республіканським кандидатом Джоном МакКейном - підійшла до своєї епічної кінцівки, яка приголомшить весь світ.

I don’t know about the whole word … but I’m certainly transfixed and I think the whole thing is epic … and exciting. 

the whole thing is - сигналізує про дещо несподіваний результат 

Не знаю, як весь світ ... але я дещо приголомшена і навіть трошечки здивована "епічною кінцівкою" ... аж нетерплячка бере.

And I think it will be very exciting if Barack Obama wins. For many reasons – one of which is to do with language, the fact that he is a brilliant speaker and communicator which is something that I think is a really important part of being a leader.

exciting - 1. збуджувальний, хвилюючий, захоплюючий, зворушливий 2. збудження

for many reasons - з багатьох причин

the fact is - справа в тім що...

really - 1) дійсно, насправді

Адже результат буде таким хвилюючим, якщо переможе Барак Обама. З багатьох причин - одна з них це мова, справа в тім, що він прекрасний оратор і співрозмовник, що є однією з самих важливих рис лідера.

Anyway, speaking of the election, if you’re one of those people who has trouble pronouncing ls and rs - like many people in Japan - make sure you take extra special care with this word: election.

election -  [ɪ'lekʃ(ə)n] 1) вибори  2) обрання (голосуванням) 3) виборчий, що стосується вборів.

Порада Японським читачам дуже уважно вимовляти звуки ls та не говорити  - rs  слові election, бо буде зовсім інше слово.

Today we’re going to do a short scene from a movie called Mission Impossible which came out in 1996.

come out 1) виходити 2) з'являтися (у пресі)

impossible [ɪm'pɒsəb(ə)l] 1) неможливий, нездійсненний 

Сьогодні ми збираємося розіграти коротку сцену з  першого фільму трилогії, бойовика який побачив екрани в 1996 році  під назвою Місія Нездійсненна Mission Impossible 

At the start of the movie a man, who is a spy, is sitting on a plane and a flight attendant comes and offers him a movie – it’s a DVD or a cassette or something.

flight attendant - бортпровідник, чи бортпровідниця

На початку фільму, чоловік, який летить в літаку, насправді шпигун, говорить з бортпровідницею яка пропонує йому переглянути фільм - щось на зразок DVD чи касети.

She says: Would you like to watch a movie Mr Phelps?

And he says: No, I prefer the theatre. 

So she says: Would you consider the cinema of the Ukraine? 

And he says: Perhaps you'll choose one for me. Thank you.

You probably know that perhaps means maybe, as in:

perhaps [pə'hæps ], [præps] може бути, можливо

Ви напевно знаєте, що слово perhaps значить можливо, як в наступній фразі:

Are you going to come?

Perhaps. 

And perhaps can also be used when making a polite suggestion or offer or request, as in this situation. Perhaps you’ll choose one for me, means: Please choose one for me.

suggestion пропозиція, порада; ймовірна обставина; натяк; вказівка; навіювання, наведення на думку; донос, заснований на припущенні; інформація, отримана не під присягою

offer ['ɒfə] 1. 1) пропонувати   2) траплятися  3) приносити (жертву) 4) висувати; пропонувати до уваги 5) пропонувати певну ціну

request [rɪ'kwest]  1) прохання; вимога 2) запит; замовлення

Слово perhaps також вживається для передачі люб'язнї пропозиції чи  прохання, як ось в цій ситуації: Perhaps you’ll choose one for me, means: Please choose one for me.

Kia Ora in Stick News today the votes have already been counted in a small town in New Hampshire and Barack Obama won in a landslide.

Dixville Notch is village, with a population of approximately 75.

Apparently, the village is best known for its midnight voting tradition which started in 1960. 

All the eligible voters in the village gather at midnight and cast their vote. 

The polls are officially closed one minute later and the results are immediately broadcast. 

This year 21 people voted. 15 for Barack Obama and 6 for John McCain.

eligible voter - особа, яка має право голосу (голосувати) на виборах

Діксвіль Ноч Dixville Notch - це хутір з населенням 75 чоловік. Хутір став загально відомим завдяки жителям які голосують опівночі починаючи з 1960 року.

Всі соби, які мають право голосу збираються на голосування опівночі.

За хвилину голосування офіційо закінчується і результати негайно оприлюднюються.

Цього року голосували 21 виборець. Із них 15 за Барака Обаму та 6 за Джона МакКейна.
